After the remarkable success of T20 at domestic level tournaments in various countries. ICC decided to make it big at the international level. So in 2007, ICC began the era of T20. On the advice of Stuart Robertson, ECB marketing manager. So the first edition was decided to be hosted by South Africa. Now, take a look at all the editions and their highlight points.
First Edition, the year 2007 and hosting nation was South Africa. Team India won the inaugural event by beating Pakistan by a margin of 5 runs at Wanderers, Johannesburg. Shahid Afridi was the player of the tournament. But the tournament is always remembered for Yuvraj Singh fastest T20 fifty in 12 balls. And hitting 6 sixes in an over to English pacer Stuart Broad.
Moving to the second edition, the year 2009 and this time hosted by England. The finals were at the home of cricket Lords and this time last edition runners up Pakistan lifted the trophy by defeating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets. This year man of the tournament was Tilakaratne Dilshan for his all-round performance.
Third Edition was held in 2010 and host nation was West Indies. This edition was won by England defeating Australia by 7 wickets, at Kensington Oval. This editions’ man of the tournament was Kevin Pieterson.
Fourth Edition was held in 2012 and hosted by Sri Lanka and this time West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 36 runs, at Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. This editions’ man of the tournament was Shane Watson. But this edition was remembered for Gayles’ explosive batting. Where he hit 16 sixes in a tournament that was most by any batsman at that time.
Fifth Edition, held in 2014 in Bangladesh as a host nation, and 5th edition was won by Sri Lanka beat India by 6 wickets, at Mirpur, Bangladesh. This edition is remembered for Virat Kohli’s brilliance for which he got Man of the tournament. But this time Sri Lankan bowlers restricted Indian batting and won the T20 World Cup.
Sixth Edition, held in 2016 as India hosting the tournament. West Indies made history by winning the world cup for the second time beating England by 4 wickets, at Eden Garden. Once again Virat Kohli adjudged man of the tournament for consecutive World cup. But the highlight of the tournament was when West Indies needed 19 of the last over in the final. But Carlos Brathwaite hit 4 sixes in a row to Ben Stokes to snatch victory.
